The health of the mountains and forests determines the health of the ocean. Everything is connected, and the Earth is similar to the human body. Try becoming a philosophical body and place your body in nature.
We thought we were dancing contact improvisation, but it was actually body philosophy dance. While keeping the idea of dancing with others in improvisation, it is not just physical contact and weight exchange, but a free dance that moves the mind and body to create the future by mobilizing the past and present. The dancing body is aware of philosophizing. What would happen if we placed a philosophizing body in the nature of Yakushima?! This is a simple but important theme.
We, CIco (Katsube Chiko and Kashima Shoko), have had a connection with Yakushima since 2023, and since then, we have felt a mysterious power every time we visit the island. We would like to kick off this year's i-Dance Japan 2025 in this fascinating and mysterious place. CIco's body philosophy naturally and artistically invites you to the process of getting away from your everyday life, relaxing your mind and body, and becoming liberated. When we think of Yakushima, we have an image of forest bathing, forest therapy, and other activities that place you in nature, opening your five senses, slowly returning to yourself and deepening. It is the perfect place to receive energy from nature and approach your own mind that you have forgotten in your daily busyness and your body that should be healthy. A quiet "challenge". we would like to explore with you the work that can only be done on Yakushima. There is probably no conclusion. Although it is short at 3 nights and 4 days, Before & After Yakushima Body Philosophy may be a memorable event.
Together with Lena, who we met through contact improvisation, we will navigate you to a special place. Below is a message from Lena.
"LIFE" is a word that spreads far and wide, and I feel it is like the great nature of Yakushima itself. The charm of the island cannot be summed up in a single word, but what I especially feel is that the nature, food, and people I encounter on Yakushima have deepened my inner journey. A sense of awakening, of the original species, of something that flows endlessly. Something subtle but overwhelming. I imagine these four days being a time of experiencing many such vibrations. It is said that just visiting Yakushima brings about many realizations, and this time we are collaborating with the world of contact improvisation (CI) by Chico Katsube and Shoko Kashima, who explore the philosophy of the body and have a deep love for CI. I think it will be a deep and extremely fun retreat.
This year, 2025, marks the 25th anniversary of CIco, making it a truly auspicious year! We hope that this retreat can gently add a touch of class to this commemorative milestone. And one more thing I want to convey -- Those who are wondering "What is contact improvisation?" are also welcome! No dance experience is required. I myself first came across it two years ago and was captivated by how interesting it was. In fact, I would especially encourage first-time visitors to dive into this Yakushima x CI space! CI... Like Yakushima, it's difficult to describe its appeal in a few words, but I feel that it has a "non-verbal" effect on communication and expression, and that this enriches our lives and daily lives. If you feel something that draws you in, then that's it. I look forward to meeting you on Yakushima.

Contact improvisation group CIco was founded in Tokyo in 2000 by Katsube Chiko. CI's activities span a wide range of fields both in Japan and overseas, including research on "communication," "body," and "sociality," as well as participating in international festivals and holding events in Japan. In response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, Katsube and Kashima Shoko moved from Tokyo to Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture in 2012 to realize their dream of living in the countryside. With the theme of "art, nature, and human life," they aim to create an environment in which dance artists can put their ideas into practice and discover a new social role for themselves. As the Japanese organizer of the i-Dance Festival, a joint project between four Asian countries, they have been holding i-Dance Japan every two years since 2013. We have been promoting artistic activities linked to the local community and developing international exchange projects, such as performances aimed at experiencing art for infants and young children, events in collaboration with local residents, appearances at TEDxKagoshima (2014) and Pechakucha Kagoshima (2014), charity performances to support the recovery from the Kumamoto earthquake (2016), general production of "Art Day" at Kirishima Open-Air Museum (2016), application of contact improvisation work to employment exams for welfare facilities, proposals for dance to enrich daily life (Adult Body Philosophy Dance Workshop 2019~), and art events held at Kirishima Open-Air Museum as part of the Kagoshima Prefecture Unique Venue Utilization Promotion Project (2021). Since 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been exploring ways to collaborate and interact without travel. How can we overcome the sudden changes caused by the virus with the functions and qualities that are inherent to humans? Believing that the answer lies in dance, an art of the body, they aim to propose this from Kagoshima. They received grants from the Saison Foundation in 2001-2003, 2007-2009, and 2013. They have received grants from the Kagoshima Prefecture Cultural and Artistic Activities Support Project in the New Normal in 2021 and 2022, and the Kagoshima Prefecture Unique Venues Utilization Promotion Project in 2021, among others.
Local coordinator living in Yakushima I usually do bodywork [Yudaneru Sessions] and collaborate as a local coordinator. Recently, I feel that humans are like Sagrada Familia. We continue to exist in fluctuation and vibration. We are constantly changing and in transition, and just when we think we've found our true self, it's gone. I feel like Sagrada Familia, where both the body and mind are constantly being created and repaired at the same time. I want to continue to savor and love such bodies and minds.♡ I look forward to meeting you in Yakushima.
